MLAI is a not-for-profit organization fostering a vibrant community passionate about AI. With over 10,000 members from diverse backgrounds—data scientists, AI developers, healthcare professionals, and students—MLAI’s mission is to make AI accessible, fun, and impactful. UNSW No Code Society
UNSW No Code Society is a student-led organisation empowering the next generation of builders, makers and innovators. Through workshops, hackathons and networking events, the society helps people build products and solve problems with modern tools, regardless of their technical background. HealthHack Sydney is its flagship event.

HealthHack brings clinicians, builders and optimists into the same room for one intense weekend of problem-solving at the cutting edge of medical innovation. With professionals from medicine, data science, and AI development all under one roof, we're pushing the boundaries of what's possible in healthcare.
The goal is simple yet ambitious: leverage cutting-edge technology to solve pressing real-world healthcare challenges.
By working closely with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and industry mentors, participants will create AI-driven solutions that tackle high-impact healthcare challenges. We encourage everyone to participate in both tracts—code your solution in the Small Tract and pitch your ideas in the Large Tract for the complete experience. Whether you're new to AI or a seasoned expert, this hackathon is your chance to contribute to the future of healthcare innovation.

Large Tract: Semifinals & Finals
Large Tract teams will pitch in the semifinals from 4:00 PM. The top six teams will be announced at 6:05 PM and invited to pitch again in the Grand Finals from 6:15 PM.

Pitch your healthcare solution to a semifinal judging panel while Small Tract submissions complete technical verification.

The top six pitching teams return to the stage for the Grand Finals, followed by judging and the awards ceremony.

How It Works
HealthHack has two tracts. We encourage all participants to take on both for the full experience—code a solution and pitch your ideas.
Small Tract (Coding)
Perfect for those who want to dive into hands-on AI development. You'll receive continuous patient vitals data—such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation—from simulated patients. Your task? Build an AI model that can monitor these vitals in real-time and alert healthcare staff when something looks abnormal. Whether you're new to AI or experienced in data science, our workshops and mentors will support you.
Large Tract (Pitching)
Ready to tackle real-world healthcare challenges? You'll get access to real, de-identified Electronic Medical Record (EMR) data and work closely with healthcare mentors. Through interviews and guided discussions, you'll identify critical bottlenecks in the healthcare system and develop an AI-driven solution. Your mission: understand the problem, build a compelling demo, and pitch your idea to expert judges.
Your Path to Success
- 1Interview mentors to understand pain points and gather feedback on your idea.
- 2Identify & define the problem using a design thinking approach.
- 3Ideate & prototype—brainstorm broadly, then pick the most promising concept.
- 4Test & iterate by gathering feedback from mentors and potential end-users.
- 5Pitch your solution with a compelling story: the problem, who benefits, how it works, and why it’s better.
Judging Criteria
For the Large Tract (Pitching), teams enter semifinals at 4:00 PM on Sunday. The top six teams are announced at 6:05 PM and invited to pitch in the Grand Finals from 6:15 PM. For the Small Tract (Coding), submissions are technically verified before the coding showcase and result.

Scores between semifinal judges are normalised to ensure fairness across judging panels.
Code of Ethical Conduct
All participants must adhere to the following code of conduct.
- 1Respect & Inclusivity
Treat all participants, mentors, judges, and organizers with respect. Harassment, discrimination, or intimidation of any kind will not be tolerated. We celebrate diversity in background, experience, and perspective.
- 2Patient Data Privacy
All data provided is either fully simulated or de-identified in compliance with strict privacy regulations. Do not attempt to re-identify patients, link datasets to real individuals, or share data outside the hackathon environment.
- 3Honest Representation
Present your work truthfully. Do not fabricate results, plagiarize others’ work, or misrepresent your team’s contributions. Cite any external tools, code libraries, or resources you use.
- 4Responsible AI Development
Consider the ethical implications of your solution. Think about bias, fairness, transparency, and the potential for unintended consequences. AI in healthcare carries real responsibility—design with care.
- 5Collaborative Spirit
This is a learning event, not a zero-sum competition. Share knowledge, help other teams when you can, and contribute to a positive and supportive atmosphere. Everyone benefits when we lift each other up.
- 6Safety & Wellbeing
Take care of yourself and look out for others. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and ask for help if you need it. Report any concerns about safety or conduct to the organizing team immediately.
Policies & Information
Intellectual Property
All intellectual property created during the hackathon remains the property of the team that created it. MLAI and UNSW No Code Society do not claim any ownership over your solutions, code, or ideas. You are free to continue developing your project after the event.
Confidentiality
Any proprietary information shared by mentors, sponsors, or partner organizations during the hackathon must be treated as confidential. Do not share, publish, or distribute such information without explicit written permission.
Project Continuation
We encourage teams to continue developing their solutions after the hackathon. MLAI and UNSW No Code Society may offer follow-up support, introductions to investors, or incubator opportunities for promising projects. Winners may be invited to present at future MLAI events.
Media & Photography
By attending the event, you consent to being photographed or recorded for promotional purposes. If you prefer not to be photographed, please inform the organizing team at registration.
Liability
Participants attend the event at their own risk. MLAI and UNSW No Code Society are not liable for any loss, damage, or injury sustained during the hackathon. Please follow all venue safety guidelines and instructions from event staff.
